Ah, the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake: first introduced 35 years ago in 1970, it appears that this is one of the most quintessential St. Patty’s Day treats. Unfortunately, like most fast-food treats, it is also probably one of the quintessential ways to drink your way into bad health. The McDonald’s shake contains over 30 different “ingredients” (if you can even call them food ingredients), including, but not limited to:
- Sugar
- Corn Syrup
- Food Coloring that is actually banned in some countries
- Sodium Benzoate
- Carrageenan
- Sulfur Dioxide
- Malic and Citric acids
- Dextrose
- Potassium Sorbate
- and more!
Really, it’s a chemical shit storm and while it may give you a little satisfying kick in the pants by McLucky the Leprechaun himself, our opinion is that it’s probably better to avoid it altogether.
Alas – fear not, for it is your lucky day! We have created our own rendition of this shake that only includes 6 ingredients(or 7 if you include water…)! No dairy, no food coloring or dyes, no corn syrup or other refined sweeteners, and no ingredients that you can’t pronounce – and it’s completely paleo, vegan and autoimmune protocol-friendly.
In order to keep this dairy-free and easy to make, we used the miraculous Yonanas Machine , which basically makes no-fuss “ice cream” out of frozen bananas (or any other frozen fruit), and it is downright amazing. However, if you do not have a Yonanas machine, go ahead and just let your frozen bananas soften/thaw a bit and put them into a high-speed food processor until they become nice and creamy like ice cream; then follow the recipe as outlined below.
I guarantee that once you make this shake, not only will you be proudly speeding right on by McChemical’s, but you’ll also need to be investing in a high-quality Leprechaun trap, as all those little green guys will probably be trying to steal your homemade, creamy, rich and healthy Shamrock Shake. Happy St. Patty’s, everyone!
